Scholarly Writing Challenge
What is the Scholarly Writing Challenge?
The challenge provides high school students (grades 10-12 or equivalent) around the world with an opportunity to showcase their scientific writing and obtain valuable feedback on their work. Students are encouraged to submit scholarly papers ranging in format from original research manuscripts to literature reviews. The challenge aims to prepare high school students interested in STEM for the world of research and science publishing.
Format
It is required that submissions include a Title, Authors and any affiliates (for example a mentor at a laboratory). It is also highly recommended that submissions follow all the instructions for Original Articles, Ethical Guidelines, and Article Format, as stated on the STEM Fellowship Journal website.
Judging
All submissions will be judged by a joint committee of the student editorial board, reviewers, and the scholarly writing challenge team. Submissions will be judged on the basis of originality and creativity, clarity and organization of writing, and application of scientific concepts.
Prizes
Selected winners may have the opportunity to have their submissions published in the peer-reviewed, open-access STEM Fellowship Journal ., after passing the STEM Fellowship Journal submission process.

The Scholarly Writing Challenge hosted by STEM Fellowship was proudly sponsored and supported by the following organizations in 2021.
A $500 prize provided by Canadian Science Publishing (CSP) will be awarded to the best submission and five certificates for best submissions in the categories of Physical & Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Environmental Sciences, and Literature Review as well as annual subscriptions to select Canadian Science Publishing journals will be awarded.
The Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology (SCWIST) is awarding three $300 cash prizes and free one-year SCWIST memberships, in recognition of an outstanding submission by three top female students in the Physical & Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences and Mathematics sections. Youth must self-declare their eligibility for this award on the Scholarly Writing Challenge submission form.
The Ariaian Young Innovative Minds Institute (AYIMI) is awarding two €50 scholarships to the Ariaian Young Innovative Minds Institute Olympiad Competition. Submissions in the Physical & Chemical Sciences and Biological Sciences sections will be considered for this scholarship prize. Youth must self-declare their eligibility and interest for this award on the Scholarly Writing Challenge submission form. BioTECanada is awarding a one-on-one consulting and networking session with an industry expert for the top Biological Sciences submission.
The Knowledge Society will be awarding a $500 scholarship to the TKS Innovation Program: a 10-month innovation program. This scholarship will be funded towards the TKS Innovation Program’s 2022/2023 cohort. This scholarship will be contingent on the successful admission of the selected awardee into the program, which will be determined by TKS’ application process. The STEM Fellowship Journal (SFJ) will be awarding the best overall submission with a full publication fee waiver for the STEM Fellowship Journal ($400 value). The runner-up will be granted a 50% publication fee waiver for the STEM Fellowship Journal ($200 value). All remaining submissions will be granted a 20% publication fee waiver for the STEM Fellowship Journal ($80 value). STEM Fellowship (SF) will also be awarding excellence and recognition awards for the best submissions in all five categories: Physical & Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Environmental Sciences, and Literature Review.
DiversifySTEM and Ontario Society of Professional Engineers are awarding a $500 cash scholarship for the top submission prepared by a youth from an under-represented minority or community. Youth must self-declare their eligibility for this award on the Scholarly Writing Challenge submission form.
Covidence will be awarding a $250 cash scholarship to the best scoring submissions under the literature review section. Covidence is a proprietary, paid web application and Cochrane technology platform established in 2014 as a non-profit SaaS enterprise that makes it easier and faster to bring together all the research from around the globe and turn it into trustworthy summaries of scientific knowledge.
JMIR Publications will be awarding a CAD $500 monetary scholarship to one of the top-scoring submissions in the 2021 Scholarly Writing Challenge. JMIR Publications is the leading open-access digital health research publisher, and largest scholarly publisher in Canada. JMIR help scientists to disseminate innovations, ideas, protocols, preprints, and research results to the widest possible audience. This includes not only other researchers but also patients/consumers and other knowledge users. JMIR also innovate in the scholarly communication space itself, experimenting with novel metrics, new business models, new models of peer review and dissemination, and new technologies.
The deadline is November 15, 2022, 11:59 PM EST. Reviewing of submissions will occur from November – January and the results of the competition should be posted by mid-to-late February.
RULES AND REGULATIONS
- To be eligible, participants must be high school students (grades 10-12 or equivalent – inclusive of those who have just graduated grade 9 and grade 12).
- The submission is the participant’s own original work and has not been previously published.
- Submissions must be in Word Format and must follow the guidelines below.
- Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
- There is no official word limit, but we request you follow the guidelines posted.
- IB Extended Essays can be submitted, however, one should make sure they fit all the criteria below. IB extended essays must be first marked by IB before being submitted. The challenge is neither partial nor impartial to IB Extended Essay submissions.
- AP Capstone submissions are allowed and follow similar guidelines to IB extended essay submissions.
- Collaborations for submissions are allowed with up to two main contributors.
- Papers must be in English.
