If you identify as Métis, Inuit, or First Nations, there are lots of academic opportunities that can financially aid you in your postsecondary journey!
To start the process of applying to scholarships and bursaries, good places to check include:
- The website of your college or university (many offer unique scholarships for Indigenous students)

- Scholarships Canada – ScholarshipsCanada – Find Scholarships, Student Awards, Bursaries & Financial Aid
The following is a list of some of the top scholarships that are offered in Canada. Note that some have restrictions based on program of study or financial need.

Indspire Scolarship – Bursaries & Scholarships | Indspire
Since 2004, Indspire has provided over $153 million in financial support through more than 49,000 bursaries, scholarships and awards to First Nations, Inuit and Métis students. It is the largest scholarship fund available for Indigenous students in Canada! There are different deadlines for different scholarships. Some include the Horatio Alger Indigenous Achievement Scholarship and Petro-Canada Award for Indigenous Students.
Nelson Indigenous Student Scholarship – https://nelsonscholarship.smapply.io/prog/indigenous_student_scholarship_/
They look for student leaders who have demonstrated academic excellence, personal strength and a commitment to preserving Indigenous identity. Deadline is at the end of June. They award a $10,000 scholarship to one student.
Husky Energy Scholarship – https://huskyenergy.com/responsibility/indigenous-relations/scholarships.asp
Husky Energy offers 5 scholarships each year. Preference is given to students in financial need.
RBC Scholarships for Aboriginal Students – https://www.rbc.com/dms/enterprise/scholarships.html
These RBC scholarships are awarded to 10 Aboriginal students each year and are renewable, which means that the awarded students will receive the scholarship every year for 4 years.
Canada Post Awards for Indigenous Students – https://www.canadapost.ca/cpc/en/our-company/giving-back-to-our-communities/canada-post-awards-for-indigenous-students.page
These awards provide funding to students who are renewing their educational learning. If you are taking a gap year or have completed a full year of schooling, check this one out.
Ontario
Dreamcatcher Scholarship – https://www.dcfund.ca/site/funding-education
This scholarship offers funding to students in Ontario and can be applied to purchasing technology, school trips or other educational special needs.
University of Toronto MD Program

Dr. Robert William Hudson Memorial Award
Requirements:
- Demonstrated interest in endocrinology
- Preference given to Black or Indigenous students
- Financial need
Roman Paduch Scholarship
Requirements:
- Aboriginal ancestry
- Financial need
- Demonstrated contribution, commitment, and interest in the native community
Murray Yolles Admission Scholarship for Aboriginal Students
Requirements:
- Aboriginal ancestry
- Demonstrated qualities of leadership and involvement with the native community
Rundle-Lister MD Indigenous Student Award
Requirements:
- Aboriginal ancestry
- Studies in MD program
- Financial need
Nathan Banerji-Kearney Award for Indigenous Students
- Self-identified Indigenous Ancestry
- Financial need
University of Alberta
Indigenous Entrance Scholarship – Entrance Scholarships | Undergraduate Admissions & Programs (ualberta.ca)
This award recognizes academic achievement in high school.
Turtle Spirit Pathway Award for First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Students
This scholarship assists students who are entering the U of A and who have demonstrated financial challenges and barriers to attending university.
